The Department of Oriental Studies originated in the year of 1961 together with the foundation of the Taunggyi intermediate college. Then it was called as Pāḷi Department. The term “the Department of Oriental Studies” has been used since 1972. The first person who acted as the Head of the Oriental Studies Department was Daw Khin Khin Hlaing (lecturer) retired from University of Mandalay. Others who had worked as the Heads of Department from 1961 to 1997 were U Han Tint (Professor of Head) retired from University of Mandalay, Daw Kyu Kyu (lecturer) retired from University of Mandalay and Dr Sein Htoon (Pro-Rector) retired from Mandalay University of Distance Education.
In those days, the students who were specializing in Myanmar, Geography, History, and Philosophy were taught Oriental Studies as a minor subject. In 1997, Professor U Tin Oo carried out as the Head of the Department and under his control, Oriental Studies specialization was introduced in the year 2000 in Taunggyi University. For the Oriental Studies specialization students, the Department offers the courses from first year leading to BA Degree, BA (Honours) Degree and MA Degree.
At present, the Head of the Department of Dr. Kay Thi Kyaw (Professor). In the Oriental Department, there are 12 members of full-time teaching staff and 2 clerks.
